What prevents newspapers/news channels from making up stuff?

Joook L asked:

I’m not talking about being biased and telling only one side of the story, I mean straight out making up a **** load of lies like “President Obama caught having *** with a raindeer”. How’s the reader/listener/whatever going to know that they’re bullshitting? What if they say this is an exclusive report for their newspaper and they’re the only ones who got the story? Eitherways it’s not like newspapers come with “proof”.

Lawsuits. Newspapers can (and have, and will) get sued for making up information (defamation). Lose all your money, lose all your credibility, and lose your newspaper. No one wants that, so they check the facts as best as possible. If something is false, they can print a retraction.

A few reporters have been fired for making up news stories, one even worked for The New York Times. The subject of fake story could complain and that would initiate an investigation, or a competitor may try to follow up on the story and discover that it’s bogus. Either way, it is probably near impossible to continue working as a journalist after being fired for making up the news.

The supermarket tabloids like weekly world news have made living out of course.

Nothing. They do it all the time. Look at the Dan Rather files. Even after it was proven that his “documentation” was forged, the NYtimes rallied behind him, saying that although the papers were fraudulent, they still proved that Bush was a draft dodger. How do forged papers prove anything?

However, Bill Clinton was given a bye for hiding in England until the amnesty was declared, and his mother wrote and told him so.

Most stories are also covered by a variety of media. If one reporter fabricates a story, before long other competing reporters will be hot on the trail trying to find out where the story originated. That would expose something quickly, and it has happened from time to time.
