Education in India

The governance of school education in India is a shared responsibility between the central and state governments, as outlined in the Constitution of India (Concurrent List). The Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India, formulates national policies, frameworks, and schemes, such as the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) operate under the central government, while state governments manage their own State Boards and schools. Regulatory bodies like the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) and State Councils of Educational Research and Training (SCERTs) develop curricula and teaching resources. The Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009, mandates free and compulsory education for children aged 6-14, ensuring access, equity, and quality. Local authorities, including Panchayati Raj Institutions and Urban Local Bodies, play a role in school management and monitoring.

India’s education standards are guided by national frameworks and influenced by global best practices. The National Curriculum Framework (NCF), developed by NCERT, sets the academic standards for grades 1 to 12, focusing on holistic, competency-based education. State Boards adapt the NCF or develop their own frameworks aligned with national guidelines. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) follow their respective syllabi, both benchmarked against the NCF. The NEP 2020 emphasizes foundational literacy, numeracy, and 21st-century skills, aligning with UNESCO’s Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education). Assessment standards are shifting towards competency-based evaluation. International curricula, such as Cambridge and International Baccalaureate (IB), are also offered in select schools, providing global benchmarks. Regular reviews ensure alignment with evolving educational standards and global trends.
