Education in Israel

The education system in Israel is centrally governed by the Ministry of Education, which sets national policies, curricula, and standards for grades 1 to 12. The system is divided into four main sectors: Hebrew State, State-Religious, Arab, and Ultra-Orthodox (Haredi), each with some autonomy in curriculum emphasis. Local authorities are responsible for the administration and maintenance of schools, while school principals manage daily operations. The Ministry allocates funding, supervises teacher training, and monitors educational outcomes. Compulsory education is mandated from age 3 to 18, ensuring universal access. The governance model emphasizes both national cohesion and respect for cultural diversity within the different educational streams.

Israel’s education standards are established by the Ministry of Education and align with both local needs and selected global benchmarks. The national curriculum covers core subjects such as Hebrew or Arabic language, mathematics, sciences, English, history, and civics, with adaptations for each sector. Standards are regularly updated to reflect international best practices, including OECD guidelines, especially in areas like mathematics, science, and literacy. Israel participates in global assessments such as PISA and TIMSS to benchmark student achievement. Local standards also emphasize Jewish heritage, democratic values, and multiculturalism, ensuring that education is relevant to Israel’s diverse society while maintaining competitiveness in the global arena.
