Education in United Kingdom

The United Kingdom's education system is governed through a devolved model, with separate authorities for England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Each nation has its own education department and legislative framework. In England, the Department for Education (DfE) sets policy, with local authorities and academy trusts overseeing schools. Ofsted inspects educational standards. In Scotland, the Scottish Government and Education Scotland oversee policy and quality assurance. Wales is governed by the Welsh Government and Estyn, while Northern Ireland's Department of Education and Education Authority manage schools. Governance includes a mix of state-funded, independent, and faith schools, with varying degrees of autonomy and accountability.

Education standards in the United Kingdom are set nationally within each devolved administration. England follows the National Curriculum, specifying subjects and attainment targets for Key Stages 1-4. Scotland uses the Curriculum for Excellence (CfE), focusing on broad capacities and outcomes. Wales implements the Curriculum for Wales, emphasizing skills and cross-curricular responsibilities. Northern Ireland follows its own curriculum framework. All systems align with international benchmarks such as the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) and the International Baccalaureate (IB) is available in some schools. Regular inspections and standardized assessments ensure quality and comparability across schools.
